Extreme Networks is a significant network switching manufacturer partner and is worldwide #2 in enterprise layer 3 switching.

Extreme has innovated a number of exciting new technology developments which build a better open converged network, reduce future upgrade costs, increase the longevity of new networks, reduce administration time and significantly reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over a 3-5 year frame.

Uniquely in the market, Extreme is the only manufacturer to have developed and shipped a) the 4th Generation of network switching platforms and b) a multi-threaded, carrier-class Operating System called EXOS. This means that clients are essentially investing in technology at the start of its lifecycle, not right at the end of it - an important consideration where continual re-investment is difficult to justify.

In Extreme's experience of providing new ICT networks for UK Enterprise customers, new network designs or significant upgrades must now incorporate five design essentials:

• ICT Security is now the major issue; hacking is no longer just about unauthorised access but now includes automated network DOS attacks, which no longer require the ‘hackers' to initially breach the system themselves. Furthermore, whilst networks must often offer Wireless Access, its traditional insecurity stems from its ‘separateness' from the Ethernet network. An evolution to Unified Wireless/Wired networking is taking place to permit true Mobility with Security.
• Lifetime scaleability to deploy and manage, at wirespeed, a potentially massive increase in the number of IP sessions. (I.e. evolving from traditional corporate PC's and Servers - to telephony, PDA's, video, wireless LAN, RF-tagging, building controls/alarms, CCTV and other control systems).
• Convergence of data, voice, wireless and video at both the network and application levels. I.e. the proliferation of new, more demanding applications during the network's 4-7 year lifetime. The emphasis will be increasingly upon real-time applications and the need for intelligent, dynamic, deterministic, wirespeed network performance.
• Because of the above, and the increasing emphasis on Electronic Service Delivery, the high availability of the network is now critical to delivering services to citizens, internal clients and the community at large. The aim should be for 99.999% in the core.
• In light of all four points above, and the fact that ICT investments are often expected to last 5+ years, the ability to measure and control the total lifetime cost (Total Cost of Ownership) is vital, plus TCO is a key to Best Value in procurements.
